My father (another teacher who got called up as a National Serviceman) knew Gordon Sharp quite well. Unlike your experience they decided that he would be better used in teaching than shooting so he never had to go to Vietnam during the war. Dad did travel over recently though to visit Long Tan and another couple of places where mates of his were killed.

Was your dad a primary or secondary teacher? What seemed to be the case in my Nasho intake (15th) was that the secondary teachers were posted to Education Corps and the primary teachers to Infantry.
I visited Long Tan in 2006 with my two sons.
I think he was primary but he taught in a one teacher school that covered from 6-15

I recollect a few teachers in my intake being posted to Education Corps. They ended up in Papua New Guinea with rank of Sergeant teaching English to members of the Pacific Islands Regiment.
Dad ended up at an Army Apprentice School in Victoria. High on physics, low on ballistics and a whole lot less jungle.
